Shopping tips
- Read every label. Most commercial bacon contains 0.5-2g of sugar per slice; many sausages contain breadcrumbs or rice flour as binders. Check the ingredient list, not just the front of the package.
- Buy in bulk where it makes sense. Costco and Sam's Club price ground beef and pork shoulder 20-30% below grocery stores. Half-cow purchases from local ranches run $5-7 per pound for every cut combined.
- Ask your butcher for free or discounted items. Beef suet (for tallow), bones (for broth), and chicken backs are often free or near-free at independent butcher shops. Same for beef heart and beef liver at some shops.
- Skip the deli case. Most deli meats are pumped with sugar, dextrose, and stabilizers. Buy a roast and slice it yourself if you want sandwich-style meat.
